Introduction to Facelift

A Facelift is a very popular facial rejuvenation surgical procedure that lifts your jawline and facial muscles to reduce the signs of aging. When drooping facial skin and deep folds become bothersome, removing extra skin and supporting the deeper tissues for a tighter, younger countenance is often the most effective solution. To meet each client’s individual aesthetic goals, Dr. Collier Pace of Greensboro, NC targets each section of the face individually to create an overall look that is beautiful and refreshed.

What is a Facelift?

A Facelift (Rhytidectomy) procedure is performed to rejuvenate facial skin in order to create a look that is smooth, soft, and defined. Committed to natural, long-lasting results, Dr. Collier Pace of Greensboro, NC improves the visual appearance of the face by tightening the skin, but also supporting the lift through suspension of the deeper structures.

This procedure suspends the platysma muscle to redefine your jawline and neck. It is a perfect solution for sagging jowls and a hanging neck which gives patients a visual appearance that is vibrant, youthful, and restored. Dr. Pace commonly performs a plication of the superficial aponeurotic system (SMAS) during facelifts which suspends the deeper tissues of the face. This takes tension off the skin closure and provides a more natural and durable result.

What to Expect on the Day of Facelift Surgery

On the day of your surgery, you will be administered general anesthesia to make your experience as comfortable and painless as possible.

Once you are sedated, Dr. Pace will make an incision in front of your ear near your temples, continuing it under the earlobe towards the back of your neck behind your ear, allowing it to blend in with your hairline. He will then gently lift the skin to tighten the underlying tissues and muscle, removing excess skin and fat along the way.

The incisions will be placed in a natural fold to minimize any appearance of scars post-healing. He will take your gender, ethnicity, and physical anatomy into consideration as he shapes your mouth and face. The incisions are then closed with sutures to create minimal scar tissue.

After your surgery, a compression dressing will be gently applied to protect the sutures and prevent any collections of fluid. You will also have one to two surgical drains to promote the removal of excess fluid.

Depending on the complexity of the surgery and the number of additional procedures, the process can take from four to six hours.

Facelift Recovery

The recuperation period for a Facelift can vary depending on the extent and depth of the procedure. Immediately post-surgery, you’ll need to rest and allow your body to heal. You can expect swelling, bruising, and discomfort in the first few days after your surgery. Dr. Pace will provide a prescription for pain-reducing medication, in addition to detailed instructions on caring for the treated area, which includes keeping your head elevated as you sleep to reduce swelling and keep stitches secure.

Avoid strenuous activity and exercise for a few weeks. This allows deeper tissues in your body to heal fully.

The time it takes to return to work depends on the extent of the procedure and your healing journey. Most patients expect to take at least a week off work to recover. For more complex facelift procedures or patients with physically demanding jobs, it may be necessary to take additional time off.
