The start of my relationship with Dr. Pace was not by choice. I had been diagnosed with breast cancer, the nature and placement of which led me to decide a mastectomy was an appropriate course of action with subsequent reconstruction. My oncologist and surgeon recommended a few names and after reading reviews I landed on Dr. Pace.

My first encounter already told me how caring and capable he was. Due to very poor communications between scheduling staff, no one had contacted me re time of our appointment. Long story short, we discovered this at the end of the day when the office was preparing to close down. Dr. Pace did two remarkable things.

First, he apologized for the failed communication and coordination. Second, he stayed very late, way past the closing time. I believe few medical professionals would have done that. Third, even though the hour was late, he did not rush our first meeting. He was calm, and meticulous to discuss all aspects of the surgical procedure and post-surgery process and expectations. He encouraged questions. Given how emotional and anxiety producing my situation was, for me to have someone who was straightforward and caring fully met my needs.

All of our interactions from that point solidified our relationship, and was more than doctor/patient. At each appointment we discussed my treatment, progress, and it was always an eye-to-eye discussion. I felt his respect for my ability to understand the medical process and to discuss with me more like a colleague than patient. He was also willing to bring humor, and especially about his own life as a doctor, husband, father. In short, he engaged with me as a full human being. This made every meeting not feel too clinical.

There is little that is more deeply personal than losing and reconstructing a breast because of cancer. In addition to all the worries about life longevity this triggered, I had to grapple with my changing image as a woman. I am thankful I chose Dr. Pace to go through this journey with me. I hold him in the highest esteem and place him in that unique category of an exceptional surgeon and human.

I researched many cosmetic surgeons in Greensboro and considered traveling to Charlotte or Raleigh for the best state-of-the-art facility and surgeon.
