Introduction to Labiaplasty

Many women deal with the embarrassment of enlarged labia (vaginal lips) or the “camel toe,” whether it is the pure discomfort in their intimate area or the trouble of them showing in tight-fitted clothing. Many factors, including age, genetics, weight fluctuations, pregnancy, and childbirth, can cause enlarged labia. If you are facing this issue and would like to do something about it, consider a labiaplasty at Greensboro Plastic Surgery in North Carolina. Founded by board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Collier Pace, our practice is committed to working with you on your journey to rejuvenation.

What is a Labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty is a cosmetic procedure typically done to reduce the size of the labia minora. The labia minora are the skin folds surrounding the clitoris and vagina. Excess skin and fat here can cause discomfort during exercise, physical activities, and intercourse. Some patients may also have labiaplasty for cosmetic reasons, such as trying to eliminate the appearance of camel toe or as part of gender-affirming surgery.

What to Expect On the Day of Labiaplasty Surgery

On the day of labiaplasty surgery at Greensboro Plastic Surgery, your surgeon and their expert team will welcome you and get you settled in the procedure room. They will review your surgical plan once more to ensure you are comfortable with it. We at Greensboro Plastic Surgery must ensure that our patients are carefree before they are wheeled into surgery. Finally, a board-certified anesthetist will administer anesthesia to make sure you are pain-free during the procedure.

Once you are sedated, your surgeon will follow your tailored treatment plan to remove the excess labial tissue through skillfully placed incisions to minimize scarring. Once the excess skin and fat are removed, they will adjust your labia to give them a symmetrical and neat appearance, closing the incisions with dissolvable sutures.

In terms of the removal of tissue, there are a few different approaches to labiaplasty. Some of them are as follows:

  • Trim Method: The Trim Method, or edge excision, is the most sought-after labiaplasty technique. It focuses on creating symmetry in the labia. The labia minora is usually trimmed in alignment with the labia majora.
  • Wedge Method: The Wedge Method is more involved than the Trim Method in that it removes a pie-shaped piece from the excess labial tissue. This triangular incision is then sutured together, leaving the natural edges of the labia intact.
  • Clitoral Hood Reduction: If there is excess tissue in this area, clitoral hood reduction is used. During this technique, balance is restored to your genitalia, reducing the exaggeration of the clitoral hood. Dr. Pace can perform several different techniques to reduce the tissue surrounding the clitoris.

Labiaplasty Recovery

Post-surgery, you will be monitored by our team to make sure your sedation wears off. Patients are recommended to have family or a friend drive them home.

Patients can expect tenderness, swelling, and discomfort for the first few weeks. It is recommended that you take that time off from work. If the discomfort persists, use ice packs and pain medication as needed. Patients are recommended to abstain from sex and the use of tampons for close to four to six weeks, after which most swelling will usually resolve in most cases.

Residual swelling may remain for up to six months.
